IMO, once you've learned the real basics of how to work/tumble in 3D, how to setup and start a render, what render layers do, etc, etc, you can move to any software you'd like.

You'll just have to learn the new softwares way to tumble and it's special nuances, but once you've learned the principles of CG, you should be able to move around quite easily. On another note, if you want to go deep down and really learn what the program is doing for you when you work in a CG program that uses a GUI, you can download 3Delight or a comparable free version of Renderman to learn how to code graphics commands to a render engine. Kind of overkill, but once you learn this level of the VFX space it makes all your other decisions based on your knowledge of the actual rendering process. It sucked learning it, but it helped me tremendously on larger projects over the years. Another, more fun way to do this would be to make a project in Three.js.

I know I'm stepping outside the actual VFX world with this one, but follow me for a sec. While not a VFX program in reality, it is used to create the same 3D scenes we would make in and CG software and its internet based so it's free. Working in Three is the closest I've felt to coding Renderman (or similar code based rendering) but with the added fun of being able to interact with it in realtime as well as share with your friends pretty quickly since you're just coding a graphic website. You still will learn things like transform order of operations and what different parts make up a material, but it will be more fun as you can add interactions that a program like say Maya or Houdini can't internally. Either way, have fun and don't get discouraged. It isn't easy and a lot of us have spent countless hours frustrated and aggravated while trying to get the image in our head onto the screen.

But it is so damn worth it! Not at all, but Blender isn't really regarded as a highend package.

It has it's limits, I admit. But people are making very decent things with it, and I feel it's pretty damn good for being free. Takes some getting used to, but after those awkward days it's a lot of fun.

I'm saving for a new pc but I do not get a lot of revenue, not yet work because I am a student,i'm in vacations:P And i'm using open-source software like blender, natron, inkscape, gimp and krita.
